The Myth Of Randomness

T

Truly Random events do not exist.

The Sun does not Randomly rise in the North and set in the East, nor does it Randomly disappear during the day and reappear at night.

A cat does not Randomly give birth to a carrot, nor do dogs Randomly sprout from the ground.

An apple tree does not Randomly fruit elephants, nor does a wild flower Randomly grow to the size of a redwood tree.

There is nothing in all of Creation that was ever Random and there is nothing that ever will be.

A seed that falls from a tree does not Randomly end up at a particular place on the ground. The location from which it may eventually sprout is determined by many factors, some of which are,

  • Wind.
    • Speed, strength and direction of wind will play a significant part in where a seed ends up.
    • Wind movement through and around surrounding objects and obstructions will also contribute substantially to its final resting place.
  • Temperature.
    • Colder temperatures lead to increases in air density, which means the seed experiences a slight increase in resistance to its descent and is therefore affected more by any prevailing air currents.
    • Areas of sun and shadow respectively heat and cool local air pockets and thus influence fluctuations in air movement for the local environment.
  • Humidity.
    • Greater humidity also increases air density, which again leads to an increase in resistance for the falling seed.
  • Rain.
    • Light rain may make the soil “sticky”, hindering the seeds ability to move too far from the place of its initial landing.
    • Heavy rain may cause flooding, which carries the seed far from the tree from which it originally derived.
  • Weight.
    • The lighter the seed the more it will be affected by atmospheric conditions, possibly finding itself farther from its place of origin than a seed of greater weight.
  • Space and Time.
    • Each seed starts off from its own unique place in the tree and the time of release has its own prevailing conditions, which all contribute to the seeds “Right Time”.
    • Space and Time variations can play a significant part in where the seed ends up. The environmental and atmospheric conditions around the particular tree will invariably change from one moment to the next.

All of these Inputs and many, many more are the predetermining factors for the final resting place of the seed. None of these events are Random. All have their own predetermining factors, while all of those also have their own predetermining factors and so on.

Additionally, the seed itself becomes a predetermining factor for other events.

It may sprout and develop into a whole new tree; it may become food for certain animals to consume; it may decompose, feeding micro-organisms and adding fertility to the soil, which then feeds other plants…

If Randomness actually existed, then fields of study like science and mathematics could not. Because what is the point of scientific investigation, if every specific event or action has a Random outcome? It would be impossible to gain any meaningful Understanding of anything.

So, What Is Randomness?

Randomness in the context of science and mathematics is a statistical concept. It is used as a simplification tool. It reduces all the unknowns that contribute to a particular outcome into a possibility.

Determining, let alone Understanding, all the variables that contribute to the outcome of a specific event is incomprehensible to current Human Understanding. It is impossible to compute the exact outcomes of Natural events due to the fact that all of Creation would need to be modelled. This requirement comes about because of the fundamental interconnection of all things, the Universal Whole.

Of course, modelling all of Creation is functionally not possible, refer to the post A Discussion About Models. Additionally, it creates Self-Referencing issues, refer to the posts Crash The Algorithm, Part One and Division By (0), A Conceptual Exercise.

The concept of Randomness leads to the idea of Probability and so, the best that can be achieved when attempting to determine outcomes to events, is Approximations and Probabilities.

As an aside, some may consider mathematics to be the foundation of Creation. This is not the case, mathematics is used to approximate Creation, it is a language that defines and describes. It is not the Source of Creation or Universal Origin itself.

The Random Number Generator

In mathematics and computer science there is a procedure known as the Random Number Generator.

This is an algorithm and like all algorithms it requires an Input, from which, it produces an Output.

The operations performed on the Input are predetermined, so for a given Input there will always be a specific Output. These operations may become complex enough to give the impression of Randomness, but complexity does not equate to actual Randomness.

The Random Number Generator does not produce authentic Random Numbers, but only simulates the concept of Randomness. It cannot produce true Randomness, because true Randomness is contrary to the very nature of an algorithm.

Essentially, Randomness itself is only a convenient concept used for mathematical purposes.

Given that the Human Being is an outcome of Nature and Nature is an algorithm with predetermining Inputs leading to specific Outputs, does then the Human Being really have Free Will?

Or, like Randomness, is “Free Will” simply a convenient concept?
