For reference purposes, the following list of Dualistic counterparts is presented. This is not a complete list, just a sampling.
Creation | Destruction | | | Powerful | Vulnerable |
Masculine | Feminine | | | Active | Passive |
Male | Female | | | Honesty | Deception |
Light | Dark | | | Reveal | Conceal |
Day | Night | | | Comfort | Discomfort |
Dawn | Dusk | | | Safe | Dangerous |
Birth | Death | | | Ascend | Descend |
Positive | Negative | | | Attack | Defend |
Right | Left | | | Awake | Asleep |
Pleasant | Unpleasant | | | Forward | Backward |
Attractive | Repulsive | | | Begin | End |
Outside | Inside | | | Below | Above |
Hot | Cold | | | Courage | Cowardice |
Expression | Absorption | | | Demand | Supply |
Inhale | Exhale | | | Hope | Despair |
Expand | Contract | | | Dry | Wet |
Source | Sink | | | Rough | Smooth |
Predator | Prey | | | Open | Closed |

Happiness | Sadness | | | Heads | Tails |
Clarity | Confusion | | | Horizontal | Vertical |
Calm | Conflict | | | Object | Environment |
Stability | Turmoil | | | Subject | Context |
Strength | Weakness | | | Space | Time |
The final four entries on this list may seem a little strange,
- Horizontal and Vertical.
- Object and Environment.
- Subject and Context.
- Space and Time.
Horizontal And Vertical
If Dualistic counterparts are considered opposite expressions of one another, then how are a Horizontal and a Vertical line opposite?
Perpendicularity is as opposite as two lines can be. As soon as the angle between the two lines shifts from being perpendicular, the lines start to becoming parallel, which means that they are becoming alike.
Two Perpendicular lines which overlap or intersect each other is one of the most basic symbols for Duality. Such a symbol is generally referred to as a Cross. A Cross or an “X” is also often used to represent Conflict.
Object And Environment
Considering that Dualistic counterparts cannot exist without one another, like Heads and Tails of a coin, then it can be seen that an Object cannot exist without an Environment and an Environment would be worthless without at least one Object in it. So, when examined from this perspective, an Object and an Environment are very much Dualistic counterparts.
Also, the Object is often an Environment for other smaller objects and an Environment is usually contained within a larger space or Environment, thus it becomes an Object itself.
Subject And Context
A similar explanation as above can be made for a Subject and a Context. The Context is simply the environment in which the Subject is expressed.
Space And Time
Space and Time are Dualistic counterparts because neither aspect can be defined independent of one another. Space cannot exist without Time and Time cannot exist without Space. This will be expanded upon in the post, Understanding Space/Time.
Counterpart pairs also create context for one another, for example, Darkness gives context to Light and vice versa. What would Light mean if there was no Darkness?
Dualistic counterparts, from an overall Energetic perspective, are also never in equal balance, they exist in a continual state of asymmetric flux. Always positing to create perfect balance but never achieving this state, thus the constant flow and movement within the Universe.
An Interesting Observation
If the term “Individual” is broken down into its components of “Indivi” and “dual” then it can be observed that,
- Indivi – Is the shortening of the word “Indivisible”, which means incapable of being divided.
- Dual – Is the shortening of the word “Duality”.
So, the term “Individual” or “Individuality” can be defined as an Indivisible Duality.
What does this mean?
Just an interesting observation.
Definition
Individual – A Unique Fundamental Sovereign Self-Aware Expression of Singularity. An Indivisible Duality. This definition is for the word as a noun, with a capital “I”.
